Christmas Week

Well not too much to update you guys about.
It was another ´white christmas´ here in Argentina. White translates to smokey and rainy this year. Besides the thousands of fireworks that are shot off at 12:00 that leave the whole country under a black cloud of firework smoke, it rained... a LOT
When I got here in Rosario, I asked my companion if it rains very much, and he replied, ´It never rains here.´ Well ive been here for 14 days and it has rained probably 6-8 of those days, and 3 of those were STORMS! Just yesterday, as we were walking around trying to find a few referrals, we got trapped. We made it to the house of a member, and she was nice enough to give us a bowl of soup. It was the first time that I had a candlelight dinner in my life. Not because the member is a snake, but because the whole entire pueblo didn´t have power! It was also the first time in my whole life that there was a constant lighting storm, were talking lightning strikes every 10-15 seconds and I don´t think there was a quite moment, because the sky was constantly rumbling with thunder!
Christmas eve we spent with a family and we enjoyed a very delicious, and juicy asado! And christmas day was a very average, normal day apart from skypping home!
We had a solid Christmas conference with the President and his wife, followed by a fun White Elephant gift exchange. Elder Beary gave an Elder Beary´s 2016 Calender. 12 Months with 12 pics of Elder Beary! Lol.

Hope you guys have a solid New Years and don´t forget to put some goals, and to keep them!

Stay safe, stay sweet

Too Much to Write!

Im not gonna break down word for word everything that happened in the last two weeks, so don´t worry.

Crazy story. Last week we were finishing up our day with the Hoyos family and it started to rain, They told us to wait a little longer and they would take us home in their car. By the time we were leaving, it was POURING rain.
We got about 8 blocks through the river-like streets before we kinda got trapped in a giant puddle, Elder Escudero and I took of the important things (like the ties) and hopped out to push. We were in knee deep agua pushing their car to shore. Their car wouldn´t start and we couldnt just leave them there stranded for the night, so we turned it around and started pushing it home, the only thing is, we were pushing up stream! we got about 4 blocks in and it took about 30 minutes, so we pulled it off to the side and left it there for the night. Elder Escudero and I, already 45 minutes late to get home, headed to the bus stop, but because of the water, there wasnt anything to take us home! After a 50 minute walk, we got home!! QUE LOCO!

Last night I made my rounds to all of the people that I have grown to know and love to break the news that I MIGHT be leaving this great area of Independencia. It was awesome to be able to see everybody that I care about and share un ratito\testimonio\oracion with them. We all laughed and joked around that maybe I wouldn´t even leave, or that my companion would leave and I would stay. When we got home full from all of the pizza and milinesa sandwiches, we got the news, and indeed, I had to part ways. I´ve been reasigned to labor in Salta la Linda, in the area of ´Rosarrio de Lerma´ (If I remember right.)

My first impressions of salta kinda remind me of my time in Yuto, Jujuy, which was an area pretty difficult. Other than the fact that it costed me $250 pesos to get from the terminal to our house, It seems to be a pretty solid area. Lots of work to do because I know they haven´t seen anybody enter the waters of baptism in a while. But Elder Cubas (de Paraguay) and I are hittin it off early and we are ready to work!

Love yall and hope you have a great final week preparing for Christmas.

Don´t forget about the poor Elder Beary and maybe you could even send him a special Christmas Letter!

November 23, 2015

Sorry guys I really suck at writing. I like to read everybodys email and respond, and then at the end I finally write my weekly letter, but I usually don´t have too much time to do it!
This week was a week of SERVICE
Tuesday we did about 4 hours of service in the A.M
A less active lady told us that she had some dirt in the back that she wanted us to bring in to the house (Yes, the people here have dirt floors) So we go out back and... nothing...? She gave us 2 shovels and an ax and told us to start carving away and this giant natural mountain/hill. she wanted us to take out all of the dirt and put it inside to level out her floor, so we did. Then we went back two days later to do more, and we still aren´t even close to done.....
Wednesday we had a conference with out Mission President and his wife. We talked about the importance of the families and how we should be super focused on finding/baptising/and completing families! Then we watched a video about Jesus talking to the Woman at the Well and the first thing he did was tell her to go find her husband and bring him to listen.
I also had to juggle in front of everybody and we ate Tacos (fun fact, every country below U.S.A don´t just eat mexican food) First taco in 14 months and it was fantastic
Friday I went on splits with an Elder Jensen (from St.G) in his area. He just got transfered to his area on emergency transfers and had been there for 4 days, lets just say we were a little lost for about 90% of the day (his comp had to do 3 baptismal interviews so we had to stay in his area). But we were able to apply the importance of the families and talked to a recent convert with 5 of his family members that don´t usually listen to the lessons, and the ALL accepted a baptismal date!!!
Saturday we had the baptism of Camila Villasanti! it turned out super duper
Sunday Camila was confirmed, and I also confirmed that I am super alergic to cats, usually I say im allergic so I push them away, but this cat was super cute and playfull, so for about 15 minutes I played with it. Well about 15 minutes later it hit me, I could feel my throat sweeling, it was hard to keep my eyes open and my forehead was super itchy, but we got to the Villasanti´s and I washed my hands and face and they gave me some allergy drops for my throat and eye drops, after about 30 it was going away. It was a friendly reminder that I still hate cats!! (thats why I only send dog selfies!!)
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!! SEND ME PUMPKIN PIE!!!!!!
Reindeer antlers that my gma sent me. lol

An apostolic update

Last week was the first week of the new transfer. An elder in our district is training now so we spent a few days together before his new comp got here.
Wednesday we were waiting in a park for a joven from the ward to come do some visits with us. As we were waiting there was a super old man walking across the street, he got to the curb and scaled it like a champion, but there was another little step to conqure and he didn´t quite make it. As he was falling backwards and slammed his head pretty badly on the ground I was running over to help him. We decided to help him all the way to his house, there was a kid on his bike who new where he lived. after about 5 minutes and 2 blocks, we ran into a guy who was looking for him and he guided us to his house. Then afterwards we went to a less active families house and had a super good lesson with them. They finally opened up and told us why they don´t go to church.
Sunday was the Primary Program. Thats my favorite sunday of the year. It was super awesome this year becuase we had 3 families come to church that we are working super hard with.

This week

Skipping all the boring stuff and getting right to it:
Friday, we all borded a bus at 3:00pm to go to Salta. The whole entire mission had a conference with the mission president and his wife . Oh yeah, and with ELDER COOK. Saturday we woke up and put on our cleanest shirt, suit, and shoes with the nicest ties we own. Headed over to the chapel and met up with the old friends, set up a bunch of chairs, and took a mission pic. Then stayed put for about 10 minutes for Elder and Sister Cook, Elder and Sister Texiera, and Elder and Sister Suarez to roll up in their mini vans. They got their just as we were finishing ¨Families Can Be Togeher Forever¨ and starting ¨I Am a Child of God¨ They stepped out and just waited and watched as we finished the verse. There was absolutely no doubt that the Spirit was present during that moment and the following two hours. We got into the chapel and had the opportunity to shake their hands, but knowing me, I gave them a good ol Elder Beary bear hug. (I was the only hugger out of the 209 missionaries.. oops)
Elder Cook talked about how we can be better branch builders of the church. full of advice and council. Be warm, loving, gracious, smile more, express love, let them know you are a mesanger. Then he remined us that we shouldnt judge those who are trying to follow Christ. It doesn´t matter your age, gender, sexual orientation, size, color, ect. and that the blessings of the restored gospel are available to all of the people that want them. The part that stuck out the most to all of us that were ther and that hit us the haredest was at the end. He talked about having spiritual experiences and that we all can have them. with all the seriousness and humbleness of his heart he testified saying ¨I´ve heard the voice of the Lord, I have seen his face!¨ There was a dry eye in the chaple as you could feel the spirt so strongly. and there was no way you could doubt what he had just said.
It was such a good meeting and opportunity to hear a special witness of the Lord here in my mission. It was like a Salta, Argentina version of General Conference.
Sunday Elder Texiera and his wife, along with President and Hermana Chaparro came to our Stake Conference and that was also powerful and uplifting. Elder Texiera gave the metaphor of the bird who gives his feathers in exchange for food. but after so many times, he no longer has feathers to fly and he cant get anymore food. then he tied it in with our agency and falling for sin.
Camila (invesitgator (Part Member family)) came to church again and is preparing for baptism this saturday, our only fear is that the bishop wont approve it because she comes from a family really inactive, but they are doing really good and coming to church. PRAY FOR THEM.

Hope all is good back in the 801 or where ever it is that you are right now. Shout out to Ivan for tying the knot on Saturday!

I hope you guys are doing well and I would love to hear from you!

The super exciting news first: Nothing happened.  My comp and I are still together trabajando in the same area.
Other than that, a pretty average week here in Argentina. It rained a whole lot and the streets kinda flooded. I went on splits with Elder Barbaran again and I was in his area. They had an activity for mothers day and we went to help serve (eat) the food for them. The 2nd councelor in my ward gave me a really, really nice tie last night. Like, really nice. Today with the jovenes of the barrio we went to Centro and played some pool and arcade basketball, then we went to the church and ping ponged it up like always.

Im excited to still be here in Independencia, Tucuman becuase I feel like I still have more to give in this part of the Lord´s viña.

I get my camera this week so my emails with start being interesting again, becuase lets face it, we mostly just look forward for the pictures and dog selfies!

As my Canadian friend would say
Onward, every onward.
Elder Beary.
I love you guys

Besitos!!

Tuesday, October 27, 2015

We were about 10 minutes into our hour of email time yesterday when the power went out, so now I have about 20 seconds to write.
This week wasn´t anything too special. We continue to search for new people to teach and work with the less active members.

Tuesday and Wednesday I was with Elder Cardoso, our district leader. We get along great because we share a passion for ties and we are both fairly fat. Wednesday night we went to paint a kitchen for a member and his less active mom. Turned out pretty great even though we weren´t able to stick around to finish the job. They now have an orange kitchen.... Thursday, I got my glasses. Friday we went to a part of my area that I have never been to, and now I know why we have never gone there, absolutly no luck. The ward Family night was a success. (thumbs down, fart noise) 5 people showed up, 4 of them were the elders, and the other was a teenage girl that comes to everything. Saturday was spent waiting for investigators to show up to 2 of the baptism services that the other ward had. and Sunday 3 investigators came to church. I had 4 minutes to prepare a talk, and the 4 seconds to prepare a lesson for the next class. Sunday was also the presidential elections here so we had to be inside at 6:00. I guess you have to have 40% of the votes to win and the highest was like 36% so theyll have to vote again in November. Yesterday was spent with some fútbol and a whole lot of ping pong.

hopefully the next email you get will include pictures!!!

A two week update in 10 minutes? Here we go

So I got a new companion. His name is Elder Escudero and is from Chile. (BOOO another Chileno. Hes cool) He has 9 months in the mission and we´re excited to work.

Basically spent the whole week trying to find and get to now less actives. We have more than 700 members in our area, and with my other companion, we hardly got to know any of them. We don´t really have investigators, but we are working hard to find the families that aren´t all members and that are being prepared by the Lord to come back to church.

Finished the week with the baptism of Natalia and Julieta Hoyos (wife and daughter of Alejandro, who was baptized a few weeks ago) Alejandro did the baptism and we had refreshments afterwards. And yes, my banana bread turned out super amazing.

We had our ward conference last week, the first one in the Independencia Ward history. About 7 months ago, a ward and a branch were combined into 1 big ward, and thats why we have so many members.

Tuesday I was dying. Not really but I thought so. I felt as if my head was going to explode. As we were emailing last week I got a super bad headache and I couldn´t read anything on the computer. I called the Presidents Wife to let her know what was up and she sent us to an Eye doctor. Long story short, My right eye (ive always had some problems with it) is overworking due to its lack of talent and I need glasses to give it a rest. Therefore, im in a hunt to find glasses. Then wednesday I couldn´t get up in the morning because my back and stomache were destroying me. Long story short, and after the first blessing I have recieved on my mission and the first time I threw up on my mission, the doctor told me that I had food poisining. I got two shots in my butt and some pills to make me better. But I was on rest and recovery wednesday and thursday.

Wedensday night we had our 1st ward family night. about 20 people came and we did the lesson about donuts and the atonement. it turned out pretty solid.

Thursday we had interviews with the President and they went really well. Lots of things to improve.

Saturday before conference 2 guys tried to rob us in the middle of the street in front of about 15 people. We told them they were crazy and that we didn´t have anything and that was about it

CONFERENCE WAS FANTASTIC. A few quotes that I liked (from memory so they probably aren´t exact)
The Holy Ghost doesn´t tell us to improve everything at once
Our direction is more important than our speed.
Straighten up and fly right
Its never to early and never to late to lead, guide, and walk beside.
Darkness and doubt are controled by us
To obey is better than to sacrifice.
If you unplug the light, don´t complain that it doesn´t shine.
Make sacred convenets, then keep them
True disciples don´t look for excuses
Ponderize
We dont have to be perfect, but good at getting better.
Trials grow conviction.
Adversity handled correctly can be a blessing
and of course all of Elder Hollands talk LOVE YOU MOM

Hope everybody enjoyed conference like I did. Make sure that we aren´t like balloons that lose this spiritual excitement over time.

Familia Beary

Letter received September 25 - Dated July 30, 2015
What up fam?
I don't really have too much to write because I email you guys every week, but... Argentina is good!  The food is fantastic!  Empanadas, Milanesa, facturas, etc.  Meals aren't anything too special.  Chicken with rice or noodles, or a potato salad-ish dish.  Breakfast is mate with bread.  Dinner doesn't exist for the missionaries but sometimes (a lot) we buy milanesa sandwiches or a member gives us deli sandwiches or mate, or pizza.  (Pizza here isn't anything special, but they love it and are prideful of it).  Normal bread is hard to come by, it's usually mini french breads, or biscuits.  Motorcycles and scooters are the family car here.  It's not unusual to see 4 people piled on to one scooter, or two guys hauling stacks of 2x4's or poles that are super long.  Also at about age 11 you're driving a moto solo.
I'll have a new comp and probably in a new area by the time you get this.  Yuto is nice.  The people are super Catholic/Evangelica.  The missionaries have been here for 19 years and the area is small, so basically everybody has already talked with the missionaries before.  Therefore, we do a lot of contacting and progressing investigators don't really exist.  Siga trabajando no mas.  We spend a lot of $$ traveling because nothing is close to us. (district/zone meetings).  I'll be close to my 1 year mark when you read this too. Days are slow, but the time is FLYING!  Everybody says that, but it's hard to believe.  Sometimes it's hard to think that I'll go home one day.  It seems like I'll be a missionary forever.  The spanish is coming.  Slowly, but coming.  Just need to study hard.  I have no idea how to write in spanish.  Sorry.  I'll probably only have 3 transfers in Yuto, which is less that I had in my 1st area in Ejercito Argentino.  Spanish is different because two words can be spelled the same but end with -o or -a, and mean completely different things, like wrist and doll.  Or the exact same word, just how you use it changes the meaning like smart and ready, or hunt and marry.  I lost my drivers license in my first area like 6 months ago.  We get $1800 pesos a month which is legally $211 dollars.  Things cost the same, a 5 dollar pizza is $50 (never bought pizza).  But if you have dollars in cash, you can sell them for about $12 pesos.  I'm not sure if it's legal, but we only do it with other missionaries and the mission president.  So send CASH!!!

1 Year

1 year ago I left the real world and entered the MTC with very little idea of what I was actually getting myself into.

1 year ago I put a nametag on my pocket that I didn´t fully understand what it represented.

1 year ago I didn´t know how it felt to be completly forgiven of your sins

1 year ago I couln´t tell you truthfully that I KNEW the church was true

1 year ago was a long time ago.

Its crazy the difference one year can make. It´s crazy how much you can learn and how much you can grow and the relationships you can have. Changes happen (Maybe not physically. I´m still fat). You learn things from others, from yourself, and especially from the Lord. You realize that everything you do, there´s an opportunity to help somebody else. After one year, you realize how much more you need to do. You start to notice all the things you haven´t necessarily been doing wrong, but that you could do better. I´ve prayed more than I have in my whole entire life, but I could pray more fervantly. I have read my scriptures more than I have in my whole entire life, but I could study them better. I have worked harder than I have in my whole entire life, but I NEED to work harder!

A year ago if I knew how much work I was getting myself into, I don´t think I would be here. But if I undterstood how important this work is, I think I would have been more obedient.

A year ago I thought it was cool to finally have Elder Beary on a missionary nametag, but now I realize it´s the least important name of the 3.

A year ago I started to learn what repentance actually was, and that if you want to be spiritually clean, you can.

A year ago I started a long journey that is still in process to tell you with my whole heart that this is the ONLY true church. The only church that Jesus Crist himself established, with the same power and authority that he had.

to end I want to quote Elder Ellis, one of the greates guys that I met 1 year ago.

¨It was special to watch as one of my dirtiest and probably the most sweat stained shirts burn in the same way the spirit burns in our hearts while we serve our Lord with all we've got... The change is real, and the happiness is glorious¨

Last week in a jif

I finished my first journal in the mission! Had lots of lessons. Had a really really cool magic trick, I threw the card in the air and it landed in the kids book of mormon perfectly revealing that it was his card. Wow que mago que soy. Went on splits with our DL and I had a good time with his comp Elder Barbaran. I petted a puppy into a deep sleep and it feel off my shoe.  Bryan got baptized!!! Also fighting some probs with the comp. sunday was a conference and it was good. Elder hales and cook both gave solid talks.

This week also in a jif

They painted our pension so we slept on the floor for 2 days. Played a ton of ping pong during pday and sadly i lost 1 match. I had to give a lesson during our district meeting. then had a 4 hour lunch with alejandro. Gave my 1st, 2nd, and 3rd blessings in my life in 3 days. Zone leaders showed up for our weekly planning and got mad. made cinnamon rolls. Gaspar got baptized! fighting with the comp some more. lots of personal study cuz my comp doesn´t like to get out of bed on time.

Hope all is well with you guys and I hope that Ill send a better email next week!

The Week

I don't have too much time so I´ll hit the highlights.

Tuesday I got a fresh new fade (haircut) and my comp lost his plaque. After 20 minutes of searching we found it broken in the middle of the road, now every time we pass that corner, he puts his hand on his plaque from prevent it from jumping off of his sweater. Also we found a golden investigator named Jonathan and I had my first sandwich de milinesa from Tucuman.

Wednesday morning the sheets were real heavy, hard to get up. I saved a dog from getting torn apart, Tried malta (coffee substitute) average. and Alejandro had his Batpism Interview.

Thursday we had our conference with the Pres. took my shoes to the shoe repair, and my comp almost got hit by like 6 cars

Friday when my comp shared his spiritual thought during lunch, all four of the people present had their eyes closed and were sleeping (me included, oops) He also pulled out a donut in the middle of a lesson. He just doesn´t understand

Saturday we had calzones for lunch and they were great! went to a different area to do a baptism. My comp baptized the mom of one of his converts. Then we had our baptism of Alejandro. He said ¨It feels good knowing that Ive been baptized in the true Church¨ Yeah, hes awesome I know. also everything kinda started late so I had some time to teach the jóvenes how to play ping pong!

Sunday Alejandro chose me to confirm him and boy was I nervous. First time Ive confirmed anybody. Then lunch was good, 2 RM´s shared mission stories for like 2 hours and then in the afternoon a less active lady sewed my backpack!

Today we went and played more futbol and then I bought 4 ties. (oops, mom send more)

For the week

Got here late monday afternoon and found a new kid named Bryan. He is the nephew of an active family, we had a solid lesson with him and invited him to be baptized on the 29th. All of this while eating dinner too!

Tuesday I continued putting stuff away in the morning and then we had our district meeting. There are 8 in my district and we have Hermanas! Straingt to lunch then straight to work.Just getting to know the members and investigators, and obviously showing magic to the kids in the street!

Wednesday we went to ChangoMas to buy some food. then we worked in the other part of our area. (This area used to be two different areas, but in April the joined into 1 ward) We had a few lessons that didn´t go so hot (info at the end) and 1 with Alejandro. ended the night with our Ward council

Thursday was a good planning session. met more members and another lesson with bryan. I also found Secco Tradicional. (Best soda in the mission that is only sold in Sangiago (my first area)) So that was super awesome

Friday I kinda got robbed, sorta. We were on the colectivo and it was PACKED. I felt something behind me and I looked to my side and a lady was staring at me with wide eyes, so I looked behind me and some homie had my Hymn book. Then he said, ´oh, this is yours´ Oh really? is that why it was in my backpack.....? (Tucuman is the most dangerous of the 4 parts in my mission) Then had lunch with a sweet family. They have a son Isias that has Downs Syndrom and the mom told me a few days before, that if he doesn´t want to talk to me or shake my hand, to not be offended. But right when I got there he was super happy and we became best friends! He gave me a giant hug and it was awesome! Then we had a lesson with Matias (Got baptized the week before I arrived.) He got baptized early because he felt like he was ready, and he was. But he still doesn´t have all of the teachings, so hes struggling a little with some doubts and trials. Then another Less active lady that has lots of potential. Then I met Gaspar and had a lesson with him.

Saturday we went up to the roof and there was a pool of water leaking into our bachelor pad, so we took care of that. Lack of planning left us with a 2 hour window for contacting... Fun. But found 1 old investigator and had a good lesson with her. Then walked a lot, and a lot more, then returned a whole lot to teach Bryan again.

Sunday was real good. Got to church and the chapel is HUGH. bigger than a lot of stake center is the good ol US of A. and had a good block of meetings where the elders weren´t in charge of everything! all 3 of our solid investigators were there, which means they are still on track to get baptized. In the tarde we had 4 lessons with less actives and our ward mission leader came with us. I like it when areas are organized, it´s awesome!

My comp:  He teaches the lesson alone and doesn´t give me windows to talk or testify, and he teaches sincerely, but he doesn´t quite go down to the investigator to help them up, rather he tries to pull them to where he is at. (example. found a new investigator and he was testifying about commandments and things mentioning Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon, with out explaing who and what they are.)  He walks slow and doesn´t let me know where we are going, so ill look behind me for him and he is half way down a different block! But I´m learning a lot of patience and he is trying (work in process) to give me more time in lessons and to not cut me off when im teaching.

Alejandro! He is about 35-40. His mom and sister are members less active. He has been investigating for a while and has a strong testimony of everything, he just doesn´t want to screw up after baptism. But he is all set and ready to go for THIS SATURDAY. We are visiting him tonight to get everything finalized.

Bryan- a 10 year old kid that lives next door to his Aunt and Uncle that are members. Has a lot of knowlege about the stories from the Bible, loves the church, and already has permission from his dad to be baptized on the 29th!

Gaspar- a 9 year old Grandson of a really strong member and son of a less active family. Unlike Bryan, he struggles with understanding some of the doctrine, but he gets it. He also loves going to church with his family. I want to work on his dad to get active, that way maybe he can do the baptism next week!

Pray for us, and our investigators. Pray that I will get a lot of patience, and soon! All is good here in Tucuman!
